The Green Media Initiative (GMI) has officially launched GMI Confidential, a secure and anonymous platform designed to promote transparency and accountability in Somalia’s environmental governance. The platform provides a trusted space where citizens, environmental experts, journalists, researchers, civil society actors, and government insiders can confidentially share credible information about how environmental and climate decisions are made, who represents Somalia at international forums, and how public funds are allocated and used in the name of climate action.
The launch comes at a crucial moment for Somalia’s environmental sector, where the impacts of climate change are worsening while transparency and accountability remain limited. Recurrent droughts, floods, deforestation, land degradation, and shifting sand dunes continue to devastate vulnerable communities across the country. Yet the systems responsible for environmental management and climate finance remain opaque, with little oversight, weak governance, and minimal media scrutiny. For years, public funds allocated to environmental projects have been handled in secrecy, leaving citizens unaware of how resources are spent or who benefits from them.
Every year, Somalia sends large delegations to major international climate summits, including the Conference of the Parties (COP). However, the outcomes of these conferences remain unclear, and questions persist regarding the effectiveness, representation, and integrity of Somalia’s participation. Concerns have grown over the inclusion of individuals with limited or no background in environmental or climate issues, while qualified professionals, researchers, and youth advocates are often sidelined.

At this time, GMI Confidential is focusing on Somalia’s participation in the upcoming COP30 Conference in Brazil, investigating how the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) manages delegate selection, funding, and representation. This effort is part of GMI’s broader mission to promote transparency, strengthen accountability journalism, and ensure environmental governance in Somalia is open, fair, and responsible.
“This is more than an investigation — it is a national accountability effort,” said an environmental activist who welcomed the initiative as a vital step toward greater transparency in one of the world’s most climate-vulnerable nations. “Somalia’s environment deserves honest reporting, transparent governance, and responsible leadership. We commend GMI for creating a safe space for truth-telling because environmental accountability is essential to our collective future.”
All submissions to GMI Confidential are treated with strict confidentiality. The platform does not request or store personal information such as names, emails, or logins. Contributors can securely and anonymously submit information in either Somali or English through verified encrypted links.
