Why GMI?
Green Media Initiative (GMI) emerges as a vital platform in Somalia’s current landscape, where environmental degradation, climate vulnerability, and sustainable development challenges continue to affect communities and livelihoods. At this critical moment, GMI helps fill a major gap by strengthening climate communication, environmental awareness, and public engagement around issues such as agriculture, renewable energy, climate change, and environmental sustainability that often receive limited attention in national discussions.
Bridging the Gap: The Absence of Green Media
In Somalia, limited environmental and climate-focused communication has contributed to low public awareness, weak access to climate information, and limited understanding of sustainable solutions. Environmental initiatives often struggle to gain visibility, while communities remain vulnerable to climate-related challenges due to limited educational resources, public engagement, and coordinated action. There is also a growing need to strengthen accountability and encourage stronger environmental and climate-responsive policies and practices.
GMI’s Impact:
Over the past two years, GMI has contributed to strengthening environmental awareness and climate communication in Somalia through documentaries, podcasts, campaigns, trainings, workshops, media initiatives, and public engagement activities focused on climate action, sustainability, agriculture, renewable energy, and environmental resilience. Through our work, we have helped amplify local voices, engage youth and communities, support climate dialogue, and encourage greater public understanding of environmental and climate-related challenges affecting Somalia.
Confronting Environmental Challenges
Somalia faces severe environmental challenges, including deforestation, soil erosion, desertification, droughts, floods, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation worsened by climate change. These challenges continue to disrupt livelihoods, reduce agricultural productivity, increase displacement, and threaten food security across many communities. Despite these growing impacts, environmental awareness, preparedness, and coordinated climate action remain limited.
GMI’s Influence
Through climate communication, storytelling, advocacy, and public engagement, GMI strengthens awareness around environmental conservation, sustainability, and climate resilience. We bring together journalists, environmental experts, agronomists, researchers, climate advocates, youth, and local communities to amplify environmental issues, encourage dialogue, and support actions and policies that promote environmental protection and sustainable development in Somalia.
Advancing Agricultural Knowledge
Agriculture remains the backbone of Somalia’s economy, yet many farmers continue to face challenges related to low productivity, climate vulnerability, outdated practices, and limited access to climate-smart knowledge and technologies. GMI works to strengthen understanding of sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, and innovative farming practices while encouraging greater public interest in agriculture, food security, and environmentally responsible livelihoods in both rural and urban communities.
Connecting Farmers and Expertise
GMI supports farmers and local communities by bridging knowledge gaps through educational programs, climate communication, and public engagement initiatives. Through radio programs, storytelling, trainings, and expert discussions, we help connect farming communities with agricultural expertise, climate-smart practices, and sustainable farming solutions that strengthen productivity, resilience, and long-term agricultural sustainability across Somalia.
Promoting a Passion for Agriculture
Somalia also faces challenges related to declining interest in agriculture and low participation in agriculture-related education and careers. GMI works to promote the importance of agriculture, sustainability, and food production by encouraging youth and communities to view agriculture as a vital sector for economic growth, climate resilience, innovation, and sustainable development in Somalia.
Promoting Renewable Energy
Somalia has significant potential for renewable energy, including solar and wind resources that can support sustainable development, climate resilience, and economic growth. Expanding access to renewable energy and sustainable technologies can help reduce environmental degradation, improve livelihoods, strengthen self-sufficiency, and support cleaner and more resilient communities across the country.
GMI’s Advocacy
GMI promotes awareness and public engagement around renewable energy, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience through advocacy campaigns, storytelling, research, and communication initiatives. We encourage the adoption of sustainable solutions and support dialogue, policies, and community actions that contribute to clean energy transition, environmental protection, and long-term resilience in Somalia. We also believe renewable energy can help Somalia reduce costly electricity, improve productivity, expand economic opportunities, and support more sustainable and self-sufficient communities.
Tackling Climate Change Impacts
Somalia remains highly vulnerable to climate change, experiencing recurring droughts, floods, extreme weather events, and unpredictable rainfall patterns that continue to affect agriculture, livelihoods, infrastructure, displacement, and food security. These climate-related challenges increase pressure on vulnerable communities and highlight the urgent need for climate adaptation, preparedness, resilience, and sustainable responses.
GMI’s Action
GMI works to strengthen climate awareness and public understanding of climate change impacts through storytelling, advocacy, research, campaigns, trainings, and community engagement initiatives. We promote climate preparedness, early warning awareness, climate-smart adaptation, and sustainable solutions while supporting dialogue and policies that strengthen environmental protection, climate resilience, and sustainable development. By working with communities, experts, institutions, policymakers, and young people, GMI aims to encourage collective action and contribute to a more resilient and climate-conscious Somalia.
