Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change Somalia (LCOY Somalia)
LCOY Somalia (Local Conference of Youth Somalia) is a national youth-led climate conference organized under the framework of YOUNGO, the official youth constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). As part of the global LCOY movement taking place in more than 112 countries in 2026, the conference provides a platform for Somali youth to engage in climate dialogue, share innovative solutions, and contribute to national and global climate discussions. LCOY Somalia also develops the National Youth Statement on Climate Change, articulating the positions and demands of Somali youth and feeding them into government, UN agencies, development partners, the private sector, and global climate processes, including the UN Climate Change Conferences (COPs).
About LCOY Somalia 2026
Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Somalia 2026 is Somalia’s national youth climate engagement platform, coordinated through YOUNGO, the official Children and Youth Constituency of the UNFCCC. As part of the global LCOY movement held in more than 100 countries, it connects Somali youth with regional and global climate processes and creates pathways for them to participate in international climate discussions.
LCOY Somalia brings together young activists, students, researchers, innovators, community leaders and youth organizations from across Somalia to share climate priorities, develop solutions, build leadership and influence climate policy. The programme combines national consultations, workshops, capacity building, policy dialogue and a national youth conference.
A key outcome is the Somalia National Youth Climate Statement, developed through nationwide youth consultations. It captures young people’s priorities and recommendations and feeds into the wider YOUNGO process, helping ensure Somali youth perspectives reach RCOYs, the Global COY, UNFCCC negotiations and COP.
LCOY Somalia representatives also participate in Regional Conferences of Youth (RCOYs), the Global Conference of Youth (COY), and the annual UNFCCC COP, where they engage with other young people, present Somalia’s youth priorities and advocate for the National Youth Climate Statement.
First launched in 2024, LCOY Somalia 2026 marks its third edition, with national webinars, consultations and workshops underway since July, leading to the National LCOY in late September (dates TBC). Somali youth will then connect with RCOYs and global youth climate processes in October–November, advancing youth-led climate action, innovation and policy engagement.
At a time when Somalia faces growing climate risks including droughts, floods, environmental degradation and displacement, LCOY Somalia provides an important national platform for young people to shape solutions, strengthen climate leadership and ensure Somalia’s youth voice is heard from local communities to global climate decision-making.
