MOGADISHU, Somalia, 14 October 2026 – The Green Media Initiative (GMI) was honored at the inaugural Somali Green Awards held in Mogadishu on 13 October, in recognition of its work in climate and environmental journalism, advocacy and public education.

The first event of its kind in Somalia, the awards recognized 15 organizations, companies and individuals for their contributions to environmental protection, climate action and sustainability.

Founded in June 2024, GMI is Somalia’s first dedicated green media platform, bridging the gap between media and the climate and environmental sectors. It provides climate information to 42 partner media stations across Somalia, has trained more than 50 journalists and young people in climate reporting, and led or supported over 25 climate and environmental related campaigns.

GMI also co-organized and led LCOY Somalia 2026 on 7–8 October, bringing together more than 100 young people at a conference endorsed by YOUNGO, the UNFCCC’s official youth constituency, to validate the Somalia National Youth Statement on Climate Change.

Recognizing Somalia’s Environmental Champions

Speaking about the significance of the awards, Abdifatah Ahmed Saed, Founder of the Somali Green Awards, said: “We are proud to recognize, for the first time, the organizations and individuals making outstanding contributions to environmental protection and climate action in Somalia. This is only the beginning, and more recognitions are to come.”

Ahmed Absie, Founder and Director of GMI, welcomed the recognition, highlighting its significance for the organisation’s work at the national level. “GMI is proud to receive this recognition in front of fellow environmental champions. After our work received regional recognition last year through the IGAD Media Award, this award acknowledges our contribution at the local level and motivates us to continue advancing climate journalism, environmental awareness, and community action across Somalia.”

In 2025, Ahmed Absie received the IGAD Media Award – Influencer of the Year 2025, recognizing his contribution to climate communication and environmental advocacy across the region.

These achievements reflect GMI’s commitment to making environmental issues a stronger part of Somalia’s public conversation. The organization will continue to support journalists and young people, promote reliable climate information and inspire communities to act for a more sustainable Somalia.
